Nipple and areola correction

Breast surgery at the Dr Kuschill MEDESTETIS Clinics covers surgical correction of the nipples and areolae. We perform nipple reconstruction, nipple reduction, and symmetrization, i.e. evening out differences in the shape and size of the nipples of both breasts.

The procedures concern the nipple–areola complex and allow its appearance and proportions to be improved. Correcting an overly large, elongated, or asymmetric nipple, as well as restoring its shape, means greater comfort and self-confidence for many patients.

All procedures are performed by a surgeon after a consultation and qualification, most often under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. We determine the scope of the correction individually, based on the anatomical structure and your expectations.

You may consider nipple correction as part of breast surgery in cases such as:

• an enlarged or excessively elongated nipple
• asymmetry of the nipples or areolae of both breasts
• a need for nipple reconstruction after injury or previous treatment
• deformity of the nipple–areola complex
• aesthetic discomfort related to the appearance of the nipples

The scope and feasibility of the procedure are assessed each time by the surgeon during the consultation.

After a consultation, assessment of the anatomy, and determination of the scope of correction, the surgeon administers local anesthesia. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes from 45 minutes to about 1.5 hours, depending on the type of correction.

In reduction, the surgeon removes excess tissue and shapes it to the desired shape and size. In symmetrization, they correct the differences between the nipples to achieve a similar appearance. Nipple reconstruction involves recreating its shape and projection from local tissues. The wound is closed with precise sutures, with attention to an aesthetic scar result. The techniques are chosen individually to suit the anatomical situation.

The result is an improvement in the shape, size, and symmetry of the nipples and a more harmonious appearance of the nipple–areola complex. Swelling and possible bruising appear immediately after the procedure, so you assess the final result once they subside.

The results are permanent. Once healed, the scars are usually discreet and hidden within the natural borders of the nipple or areola, and their final appearance depends on the technique, location, and your skin's individual characteristics.

Recovery is usually mild, but proper care of the wound and sutures is crucial for aesthetic healing. Remember to:

• keep the wound and sutures clean and dry as instructed by the physician
• wear a soft, non-restrictive bra or a gentle dressing as directed
• avoid pressure on and rubbing of the nipple area for the first few days
• limit physical exertion, especially that involving the chest
• avoid the swimming pool, sauna, and hot baths until healed
• come in to have the sutures removed on the scheduled date
• protect the scar from the sun and use SPF sunscreen once healed

Contraindications and situations requiring caution include:

• blood clotting disorders or taking anticoagulants (requires assessment)
• an active skin infection or inflammation in the operated area
• poorly controlled chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension)
• pregnancy and breastfeeding
• unexplained changes within the breast requiring diagnosis first
• a tendency to form keloids (relative contraindication)
• allergy to local anesthetic agents

The final qualification is carried out by the surgeon during the consultation.
