Prominent ear correction (otoplasty)

Correction of protruding ears, i.e. otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that changes the shape and projection of the auricles. Protruding ears are one of the most common congenital structural features, which for many people are a source of complexes as early as childhood.

The procedure permanently brings the auricle closer to the head and restores its correct folds, restoring harmonious facial proportions. In adults and older children it is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, whereas in younger children it is most often performed under general anesthesia.

Otoplasty is worth considering when the following occur:

• ears that protrude excessively from the head
• abnormalities in the shape of the auricle (e.g. an underdeveloped fold)
• excessive projection of one or both ears
• asymmetry of the auricles
• aesthetic complexes related to the appearance of the ears

After a consultation and qualification, the surgeon administers local anesthesia (in children usually general, sometimes with a short hospital stay). The procedure lasts from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the extent of the changes.

The operation involves making an incision in the natural groove behind the ear, dissecting the tissues, and appropriately reshaping the auricle. If needed, the surgeon removes excess cartilage and skin, then restores the correct folds and secures the cartilage with sutures, bringing the ear closer to the head. The wound is carefully closed, and the scar remains hidden behind the auricle.

The ears are permanently brought closer to the head, and their shape and symmetry are improved. For many patients, this means the end of years of complexes and freedom in choosing a hairstyle.

The procedure does not need to be repeated. Swelling occurs immediately after the operation, so you assess the full result once healing is complete.

Proper wound care and consistent wearing of the headband determine the durability of the result. Remember to:

• leave the dressing in place for the first 2–3 days as instructed
• wear a special protective headband around the clock for about 2 weeks
• then wear the headband at night for the next approximately 4 weeks
• keep the wound clean and cleanse it with an antiseptic
• take the recommended painkillers and anti-swelling medication
• avoid excessive physical exertion and contact with or injury to the ears
• come in to have the sutures removed between day 8 and day 12

We do not perform it in cases such as:

• blood clotting disorders
• poorly controlled chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension)
• active viral or bacterial infections
• pregnancy and breastfeeding
• a tendency to form keloids (relative contraindication)
• lack of cooperation in young children
• allergy to anesthetic agents

The final qualification is carried out by the surgeon during the consultation.
