Concerns
I want to have a mole or skin lesion removed
A mole, fibroma, sebaceous cyst, lipoma or wart — most skin lesions can be removed quickly and safely. But first they need to be examined.
Every skin lesion is assessed by a doctor first. Some only need to be monitored, some can be removed for aesthetic reasons, and others should be removed and tested. Deciding for yourself on the basis of photographs found online is the worst possible plan — an assessment in the clinic takes a few minutes.
The method depends on the nature of the lesion. Lesions that qualify for microscopic examination are removed surgically — under local anaesthetic, with the tissue sent for histopathological examination. Small benign lesions, such as fibromas or warts, can be removed non-surgically, without stitches.
If you don't know what your lesion is, that is all the more reason to start with a consultation. You will leave it with a clear answer: monitor, remove or test.
