What the treatment involves

Botulinum toxin is a recognized method of chronic migraine prevention, confirmed by clinical studies (the PREEMPT program). Administered into specific points of the head and neck muscles, it inhibits pain transmission.

The treatment does not treat a single attack but prevents subsequent ones — it reduces the number of days with migraine and the severity and frequency of the pain. It is preventive in nature and is repeated at regular intervals.

Indications

We consider the treatment primarily for:

  • chronic migraine (headaches on at least 15 days per month)
  • frequent, recurrent migraine attacks
  • insufficient effectiveness or intolerance of pharmacological treatment

How the treatment works

The treatment is preceded by a consultation and qualification, during which the doctor confirms the indication for migraine treatment.

We administer the product as a series of microinjections into the muscles of the forehead, temples, nape and back of the head according to the migraine treatment schedule. The procedure lasts 15–30 minutes and requires no recovery.

Results

The effect develops gradually — improvement is usually felt within about 2–4 weeks, and the full preventive action builds over subsequent treatment cycles.

The action usually lasts about 3 months, which is why for a lasting effect the treatment is repeated at regular intervals.

Aftercare

The treatment does not take you out of daily activities. Remember to:

  • for 24 h limit intense physical exertion and avoid alcohol
  • for about 2 weeks avoid the sauna and solarium
  • do not massage the injection sites for several hours after the treatment

This is complemented by the standard recommendations after botulinum toxin. The anti-migraine effect builds gradually and stabilizes after about 2 weeks; report any unusual symptoms to the clinic:

  • hold off on air travel for at least 24 hours
  • for about 2 weeks avoid massage and pressure on the injected area
  • for 14 days steer clear of the sauna, solarium, hot baths and overheating the head
  • postpone any planned surgical procedures under anesthesia by about 2 weeks

Contraindications

We do not perform it in cases including:

  • diseases and disorders of neuromuscular conduction
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • allergy to the product's components
  • local skin infections in the injection area
  • clotting disorders and taking certain medications (e.g. D-penicillamine, tetracyclines)

The final qualification is carried out by the doctor during the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Does botulinum for migraine work immediately?+

No. This is preventive treatment — improvement is usually felt after 2–4 weeks, and the full effect builds over subsequent cycles.

Is the treatment safe?+

Yes. Botulinum toxin in the prevention of chronic migraine is well studied and used under medical supervision.

How often should the treatment be repeated?+

Usually about every 3 months, in line with the treatment schedule and the recommendations of the attending physician.

Does the treatment hurt?+

We use local anesthesia, so the injections are practically painless.

Will botulinum replace my migraine medication?+

The doctor decides on any changes to your current treatment. The treatment is part of prevention, not a rescue remedy for an attack.

How much does Botox for migraine cost?+

The treatment costs 3600 zł. It covers the full injection protocol performed by a doctor; the qualification is preceded by a history focused on the nature and frequency of the attacks.

Do migraine injections help everyone?+

Botulinum toxin therapy is intended for chronic migraine (15 or more days with a headache per month). The best effects are usually seen after the second cycle of treatments — in some patients the number and severity of attacks drop significantly, in others the effect is moderate. The qualification is carried out by a doctor.
